Applications are now open for the Summer Semester 2027 exchange program. Eligible students are invited to submit their applications for the internal selection process according to the guidelines detailed below:

I. Exchange Scope and Quota

Program Quota: This application cycle specifically targets the Summer Semester 2027 (single-semester exchange). According to the bilateral agreement, the maximum quota is 4 single-semester students (or 2 full-year students) per academic year.

II. Eligibility and Language Proficiency Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the requirements stipulated by both institutions:

Enrollment Status: Applicants must be full-time students enrolled in the College of Science at NTNU and must have completed at least one year of full-time study at the home institution prior to departure.

Academic Record: Applicants must demonstrate a good to excellent academic record.

Language Proficiency and Crucial Academic Warning:

Students must possess sufficient language proficiency to successfully complete coursework in the language of instruction at the host institution.

UoC officially recommends a minimum language proficiency level of CEFR B2 in either English or German (or an official language proficiency evaluation statement signed by a language professor).

【Crucial Notice on Language of Instruction】: Please note that the vast majority of undergraduate courses at UoC are taught in German. Undergraduate applicants must carefully evaluate their language capabilities, as UoC incorporates German proficiency as a critical factor in its final admission decisions. Conversely, English-taught curricula are more widely available at the Graduate (Master’s/Ph.D.) level.

III. Key Dates for Summer Semester 2027

Applicants must take note of the scheduling differences between the German and Taiwanese academic calendars to plan their coursework and leave of absence appropriately:

Official Semester Duration: April 1, 2027 – September 30, 2027.

Pre-semester Period: March 2027 (Pre-semester intensive German language courses take place during this month).

Lecture Dates (Instructional Period): April 5, 2027 – July 16, 2027.

IV. Course Load and Enrollment Regulations

Recommended Course Load: Exchange students are highly recommended to take 30 ECTS credits per semester.

Course Catalog Search: The course catalog for the upcoming semester is typically published 2 to 3 months before the semester starts via the Campus Management System “KLIPS 2.0”. When using the search engine, students must select “A2 Students from Partner Universities” under the “Degree Programmes” dropdown menu to view courses open to exchange students.

Learning Agreement: Prior to departure, selected students must determine their study plan with the approval of academic advisors at both institutions and sign a “Learning Agreement”. Credit transfers back to NTNU are subject to the final approval of the student’s home department.

V. Financial Expenses and Fees Waiver Policy

Tuition Waiver: Selected exchange students are exempt from paying tuition and other standard academic fees to the host institution.

Social Contribution Fee: In accordance with the MoU, students are responsible for incidental fees for services. UoC currently charges a mandatory Social Contribution Fee of approximately €350 per semester. This fee includes the “Deutschlandsemesterticket,” a personalized digital transit ticket valid for unlimited travel on local public transportation throughout Germany.

Self-Funded Expenses: International transportation (airfare), visa fees, textbooks, accommodation, meals, insurance, and personal living expenses must be fully met by the student. The estimated total cost of living (including rent) is approximately €1,000 per month.

VI. Health Insurance and Accommodation Obligations

Mandatory Health Insurance:

Students must provide proof of personal health, emergency evacuation, and repatriation insurance valid in Germany that satisfies local visa regulations.

For final official enrollment at UoC, students are legally required to present a proof of health insurance coverage from a German statutory health insurer (which currently costs approx. €130 per month) or a formal exemption certificate.

If traveling to Germany prior to the official semester start (e.g., in March for pre-semester courses), taking out a travel health insurance policy is strongly recommended.

Accommodation Advisory: The local housing market in Cologne is extremely tight and demanding. While UoC provides general housing assistance, students are strongly advised to apply for a room in the student dormitory through the Kölner Studierendenwerk (KSTW) immediately upon receiving their official UoC admission letter. (Dormitory rent ranges between €250–€450/month, while private market housing ranges between €450–€600/month).

Code of Conduct: Exchange students are fully subject to the rules, regulations, and policies of UoC, as well as the local laws of Germany. UoC reserves the right to terminate an exchange program if a student violates any institutional policies.

VII. Selection Mechanism, Deadline, and Submission Guidelines

College Nomination System: This exchange program operates strictly under a “College Nomination System”. All applications must be reviewed and officially nominated by the College of Science at NTNU. Students are strictly prohibited from submitting individual applications directly to the host university.
